A traditional dry-stone barraca among vines and flowering almonds in the Hondón de las Nieves basin

Hondón de las Nieves

A vineyard town sheltered by limestone sierras, known for individually bagged table grapes and an unusually rich landscape of dry-stone field shelters.

Vines, stone and shelter

An agricultural basin below the sierra

Hondón de las Nieves lies in a broad inland hollow between pale limestone ridges. Vines, almonds and olives divide the dry ground around the main town, La Canalosa and El Rebalso.

Paper bags hanging from the vines are part of a protected table-grape method, while small dry-stone barracas record how generations of workers made practical shelter from the same rocky landscape.
